"On the cover of this month’s issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Researchers led by UCSF Health neurosurgeon Jake Young, MD, Nadeem Al-Adli, MD, and UCSF Brain Tumor Center director Mitchel Berger, MD, show, in a series of more than 500 cases, that a transcortical surgical approach improves outcomes for patients with both newly diagnosed and recurrent insular gliomas.

These tumors are challenging to remove in surgery because they are located near critical arteries to the brain as well as regions important for language and movement. But using brain mapping techniques that identify cortical and subcortical pathways, neurosurgeons can safely maximize the amount of tumor resected.
